The brief was ‘Brecht’, and there’s no way I’ve got the energy to write a full on Brechtian short, how would you even write a Brechtian short?! It’s called EPIC THEATRE, but it’s the weekend, and on the weekend we are challenged. And boy was this a challenge. After writing too much yesterday I needed a day just cool down. I feel I can write some good stuff next week, but nothing was working for me today.
So it’s a short piece. England and Wales have been at war with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland and we focus on some refugees in a truck heading for Spain. But I want this refugees to all be Leavers (you know the type that proudly stated that any refugees coming across the waters from the Middle East should be shot?), so there were, and then I very happily did them all in.
I mean, you’re not supposed to form emotional attachments to your characters in the style of Brecht right?
I’ll admit, I’ve taken something away from this, and I haven’t so much as looked at a piece of Brecht theatre in 5 years, and I haven’t studied it in 12 years. So, you know. It was could to touch base with this style again. Not for me though.
Here’s the piece and I’ll pop up the poem I wrote yesterday as an apology for such lousy work:
7. You Only Get What You Give And What You Get You Won’t Want
